Rock 'N' Roll Call
EDITED BY JULIA BEESON
SCHOOL OF ROCK, starring funnyman Jack Black, sent enrollment soaring at the Paul Green School of Rock, the real-life inspiration for the hit film. The performance-based, after-school rock music program for kids 7-18 recently opened chapters in North Park and Sorrento Valley. Renowned rock guitarist Mike Keneally, who’s played with Frank Zappa and Joe Satriani, heads the San Diego schools and is national music director for the 22 branches.
“I’ve lived in San Diego most of my life, but my musical impact has been made elsewhere,” says Keneally, who’s toured throughout Europe and performed mostly around Los Angeles. “This is a measurable way for me to make a cultural impact in my community.”
And he fully believes in the mission set forth by Philadelphia guitarist Green: Save rock ’n’ roll, one kid at a time. “He’s very passionate about helping create a new generation of rock virtuosos,” says Keneally. Students learn by playing classic rock tunes by bands such as The Beatles, Cream and Led Zeppelin. More information: schoolofrock.com.
