Monarch High

Monarch has many qualities and opportunities that other schools don’t. These are the main reasons kids go there.

We don’t have a lot of teachers, but there are plenty of students. Instead of the teachers teaching all the time, we do independent studies. This gives us a chance to work at our own pace, and it also gives the teachers a break. And if you have completed your academic work for that grade and meet the requirements, you’re ready to graduate.

You also have to complete your elective credits. The advantage to this is that you get to pick whatever you want. One of the six electives I have chosen is steel band.

Some of the drums we play were built by Monarch students. The others are from Trinidad. To me, the music at Monarch is like a form of art. It gives me a chance to release my stress and learn something new at the same time.

Everyone at Monarch has not only a purpose but a responsibility. My responsibility is not only to learn but to just try. There may be things going on in my life that try to get in the way of my goals. But Monarch has taught me to reach high.

While we learn to achieve our goals, we are also learning how to trust. Many students at my school have various problems and struggles in their lives. That makes it hard to learn from teachers or anyone you don’t trust. So the teachers not only have the responsibility to teach us but to get to know us. In my opinion, they are doing a great job!

Monarch has many opportunities that can prepare you for the future. It starts with an opportunity for a job. Susan Armenta, Monarch’s director, and businessman Ralph Rubio and many others got together and opened Cabo Café for Monarch. It gives us a good job experience and opens our eyes to a future job.

You also get opportunities to meet interesting people here. For example, I’ve met Tony Hawk, the Padres baseball team, the Chargers and lots more.

Attending Monarch has changed my life. I’ve learned to respect others and myself. Monarch has helped me to seek confidence in myself. The teachers, assistants, volunteers and especially my friends have made a difference. Thanks to this school, I know I’ll have a very successful life.
