GETTING INKED

Kymberli Parker had been designing custom invitations for family and friends for a while when she decided she’d like to run her own business. As fate would have it, the longtime owner of Little Italy’s popular papery, India Ink, was looking to retire. The timing was perfect, and Parker recently took her place as the store’s proprietor, making plans for the future of her new business.

“What I see for the future of India Ink is providing a lot of classes, bringing in more corporate clients and utilizing our internal graphic design center a lot more,” Parker says. “We are fortunate to have our own graphics department, so we are able to do logos and motifs, create invitations from start to finish, select papers and do custom color matching.”

India Ink’s graphic design center and its unique selection of products that’s refreshed weekly has earned the store a fan base, especially among brides looking for creative, high-quality paper products for their big day. Whether they’re following current trends or looking to create their own theme, there’s something at India Ink for every bride.

As far as current trends go, Parker says she’s seeing more muted and deep colors as well as a return to letterpress.

“Fall brides are choosing colors like sage, browns and blues and a lot of wood-type themes, like acorns, leaves and things to do with the season,” she says. “We also have a very popular palm tree and an orchid that’s a really great design.” “I’m sure that in spring, we’ll see plenty of flowers. It’s all very cyclical.”

Other trends Parker is seeing in invitations is the use of an RSVP postcard instead of an envelope, allowing couples to go green, while also saving some green on postage. Brides are also coordinating their paper from start to finish.

“Because we recommend the save-the-dates go out as far in advance as possible, they don’t have to be too matchy-matchy, but the rest of the paper — from the invitation to the day-of paper to the thank-you notes — is coordinated,” she says.

Part of what Parker loves most about her new position at India Ink is the store’s capability to create the perfect paper package for every taste.

“I love the fact that we’re not standard designers,” she says. “We offer many books that our competitors offer. However, we design out of those books. Our brides don’t have to order just one design — we like to add color schemes and embellishments to create something special for that particular bride.”
