The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Date: 2017-10-13 | For more show dates, click here.

In The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, an eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation. This bee, now at The Lyceum Space in San Diego, is one unforgettable experience.

Czech Violinist Pavel Sporcl in Concert

Date: 2017-10-07 | For more show dates, click here.

You might say that Pavel Sporcl is very much like the carbon fiber-infused blue violin he commissioned from violin maker Jan B. Spidlen: He manages to be traditional and yet highly modern at the same time. The Czech violinist's talent, passion and unorthodox approach to classical music have made him the most sought-after musician by both purists and young trailblazers alike. He specializes in the music of Dvorak, Paganini and Bach, and recently added a CD of all of Bach's Suites and Partitas to his more than 20 already released discs. He's enjoying immense critical acclaim, and now you can experience his talent live in the intimate setting of Point Loma Assembly as he performs a program of Bach and Paganini.

American Hero: "Brilliant Comedy" (Variety) Serves Sandwiches With a Side of Satire

Date: 2017-09-21 | For more show dates, click here.

Bess Wohl's provocative new play American Hero takes place at a newly-franchised sub shop at the local mall. There, three up-and-coming "sandwich artists" -- a teenager, a single mom and a downsized corporate banker -- are perfecting the mustard-to-cheese ratio according to the company manual. But when their shot at the American dream is interrupted by a series of peculiar events, they become unlikely allies in a post-recession world. Even as corporate America gives up on them, they band together to prove that heroes aren't born, they're made ... fresh to order on your choice of bread. Hailed as a "brilliant comedy with cutting social satire" (Variety), this super-sized dark comedy about life, liberty and the pursuit of sandwiches now comes to San Diego's New Village Arts Theatre.

An Epic Journey in Father Comes Home From the Wars

Date: 2017-09-21 | For more show dates, click here.

The Greeks may have set the template for epics, but American history has epics of its own. Father Comes Home From the Wars, like the Greek tragedies that inspired it, is the story of a warrior setting out for battle and then making the long journey home. Set in the Civil War, this explosively powerful new trilogy by Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog) at San Diego's Horton Grand Theatre follows the slave, Hero, who agrees to fight for the Confederacy in exchange for his freedom, traveling from West Texas to the Confederate battlefield and back home again. Described as Parks' "finest work yet" by The New York Times, the Father Comes Home From the Wars trilogy -- which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist -- is a masterful blend of the serious and the comic that is at once an epic drama, a moving personal story and a thoughtful meditation on liberty and loyalty.

City Ballet of San Diego: The Firebird & 3 Ballets

Date: 2017-11-03 | For more show dates, click here.

Every great artist has a breakthrough piece. For Igor Stravinsky, it was The Firebird, a 1910 ballet inspired by a series of beloved Russian fairy tales. Set to Stravinsky's captivating score, this classic ballet tells the story of Ivan, who finds himself lost in a dark, dangerous place filled with desperate characters, where a cruel boss rules by fear and intimidation. It is the beautiful, mythical Firebird who first charms and eludes Ivan -- and ultimately saves him. Featuring the work of resident choreographer Elizabeth Wistrich, City Ballet of San Diego presents their take on this masterwork as part of an eclectic program at Spreckels Theatre, which also features George Balanchine's Serenade, the San Diego premiere of Ash, and Samuel Barber Adagio, an award-winning pas de deux crafted by Wistrich in 1990. Musical accompaniment is by The City Ballet Orchestra with John Nettles conducting. There is also a free lecture by artistic director Steven Wistrich 30 minutes before each performance.
