La Jolla Symphony & Chorus Pay Tribute to Earth/Peace
Date: 2013-06-08 | For more show dates, click here.
The 110 musicians of the La Jolla Symphony and its 130-member chorus are always on the cutting edge when it comes to orchestral-vocal concert performances, and their latest is no exception. Conducted by David Chase, the program features a trio of the 20th century's greatest composers exploring the idea of peace on earth. Soprano Mary Jaeb and bass-baritone Dean Elzinga are the special guest soloists for this event, which opens with Benjamin Britten's intensely pacifist Sinfonia da Requiem. That piece is followed by expressionist composer Arnold Schoenberg's Friede auf Erden (Peace on Earth) and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem, a stirring work based on the Bible and the poetry of Walt Whitman. A pre-concert lecture begins one hour prior to the performance.
