The Woman of Burwood Group

Joanna Robinson

THINK BIG. Those are the words emblazoned on the wall of Burwood’s newest operations center in San Diego. Burwood Group is a technology consulting firm and systems integrator that has been awarded Best Places to Work many times in its 20-year history, and Joanna Robinson, regional vice president, would certainly agree. Under her leadership, Burwood Group has doubled the size of their Western Region within the last year.

Robinson is passionate about advancing the cause for women in technology, encouraging young women to be bold and confident—to take risks—and one of her current initiatives is developing internship and associate programs for high school and college graduates for entry-level positions in IT.

“I am excited about our continued expansion in California,” she says, “and providing mentorship and development programs for young women interested in technology.”

Just a few generations ago, only a small percentage of our mothers worked and even fewer held leadership positions. Today, women are evolving and expanding their careers and becoming role models for the next generation. “With 70 percent of our workforce being female, we launched our Hub Women initiative in 2015,” says Senior Account Executive Tracey Christ, CISR. “Hub Women provides education, collaboration, inspiration, and leadership opportunities for women to thrive personally and professionally.” As one of the largest insurance brokers in the world, Hub International employs a one-of-a-kind aggregation of insurance entrepreneurs with a deep knowledge of the big issues clients will face now and in the future. “We offer a holistic evaluation process to uncover hidden opportunities and develop long-term solutions to mitigate risks, lower costs, and deliver a ‘big company’ experience to middle-market clients. Most importantly, we maximize the value to our clients.”

The Woman of VIA Technical

Natalie Viani

Natalie Viani was a recent USD graduate when she began working at a San Diego startup recruiting IT professionals. Today, VIA Technical is one of San Diego’s fastest-growing private companies, on the Inc. 5000 list, and certified by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council.

“My success came from my commitment to my career and working for years to accomplish my goal of owning my own business.” When it comes to mentoring others, Natalie recommends hard work, and a willingness to do what most people won’t. “There is no shortcut to success. Be humble. Be kind. Be smart. Be a team player.” A new mom, Natalie is excited to let her daughter know “she can do and be anything she can dream.”

The Woman of Tailored Hair for Men

Lizzy Broughton

In life, it’s easy to forget to take time for yourself. Tailored Hair for Men encourages clients to take an hour each month to come in, sit back, and enjoy the “Tailored Experience.” Founder Lizzy Broughton spent a decade developing her skills in men’s grooming before opening the shop as a one-chair studio in 2012. Today, the shop has grown to multiple chairs in the heart of the East Village with a second location on the way. “I saw a huge gap between traditional women’s salons and barbershops. I opened a space for the man who wanted an experience-based service with someone who specialized in men’s haircutting.”
