Derrick Miller, Firefighter, City of San Diego, since 2006

By Rebecca Smith

Job Description: I was just promoted to the rank of Engineer at the downtown station, so I get to drive Big Red!

By the Numbers: Our tanks carry 500 gallons, and our nozzles spray 250 gallons per minute, which gives us 2 minutes of water, when we’re not connected to a hydrant.

More Fun Facts: Our goal is to get to a call in under six minutes. Also, we run 3 miles in less than 24 minutes.

Worst Moment at Work: When you can’t make a difference, even with all the training and equipment.

First Job: Pack-ing pallets on a fruit farm in the Central Valley.

How I Landed Here: I worked as a summer firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service to pay for college.  Then I tested for 22 fire departments to get this job. Don’t ever give up on your dreams!

Off the Clock: Pastor of Mosaic Church in Barrio Logan.
