Through former left-fielder Vince Coleman’s extensive travel during his time in Major League Baseball, he has had an opportunity to play a variety of high-profile golf courses. Vince knows a good golf course when he sees one! So when I asked him to name some of his favorite San Diego golf courses, it came as no surprise that The Vineyard at Escondido would be at the top of his list.

One of the fun aspects of The Vineyard is the drastic difference between the front and back nine holes. The front nine requires you to play target golf while you wind through fairways carved out of heavy brush, creek beds, natural habitat, and wooded areas.

As you move to the back nine, you are met with a more wide-open feel, including spectacular views and significant elevation changes. There is a special feeling of grandeur as you stand on the elevated tee boxes, looking at the majestic fairways with beautiful and unique homes sprinkled in the background.

The course is consistently in good shape and the color of the grass in the fairways doesn’t change with the seasons.

One of Vince’s fondest memories while playing The Vineyard at Escondido is his hole in one on No. 3. Better yet, it was the only skin that held up in his group that day.

The criteria that make up our favorite golf courses extend beyond merely a great layout and course condition. Memories and experiences make golf courses special as well. That is what is so great about the game of golf. There is nothing better than spending quality time with people you hold dear. Anyone who plays the game knows this. And those who have not picked up the game yet—what are you waiting for?
