  • September 19: A dual exhibition curated by Bram Dijkstra, Nature Improved: San Diego Artists Interpret Our Landscape opens at San Diego History Center and then at Oceanside Museum of Art, Oct. 26; through Jan. 26, 2014.

  • September 21: It’s multimedia installation art at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla’s Lost In The Memory Palace: Janet Cardiff And George Bures Miller. Come before Jan. 12.

  • September 21: Science + Art = Dana Montlack: Sea of Cortez. See her photos of biological specimens at MCASD La Jolla by Jan. 12.

  • October 1: All month long, the Mingei International Museum features Diwali Festival of Lights, an exhibit of museum pieces celebrating Indian life and India’s national festival.

  • October 2: At MOPA’s Photo Auction 2013,  enjoy a cocktail reception and silent auction overseen by the president of Christie’s Los Angeles.

  • October 4: The Timken Museum of Art gives us Object Lessons: Gainsborough, Corot, and the Landscape of Nostalgia (paintings from 1700-1800s). Through Feb. 2.

  • October 5: Please Be Seated for this aptly named event at the Mingei, featuring furniture and chairs from a variety of periods and cultures.

  • October 8: Sixteen artists, one state. Staking Claim: A California Invitational showcases Californian photographers at MOPA until Jan. 26.

  • October 16: After a reception in Las Vegas, Gabe Leonard’s Luck rolls into Escondido’s Distinction Gallery through Nov. 2.

  • October 18: Kevin Cooley: Elements features two video installations on display at MOPA, through Feb. 2.

  • October 19: See photographs by local youth captured in My City, Your City: 8th Annual Youth Exhibition at MOPA until Feb. 2.

  • November 1: For the month of November, the Mingei displays a Day of the Dead Altar in collaboration with the University of Tijuana.

  • November 2: Noah Doely makes good on his UCSD MFA with the pinhole photography of Noah Doely: In The Light, through Feb. 25 at the San Diego Museum of Art.

  • November 6: If you like it then you should’ve... Put A Bird On It: Curated By Aaron Jasinski. Yes, it’s a riff on Portlandia. The group show stays at Distinction Gallery until Dec. 7.

  • November 7: Melora Kuhn begins her residency at Lux Art Institute with paintings, sculpture, and installations. See her in studio until Dec. 8; artwork through Dec. 28.

  • January 9: Painter and sculptor Marcus Kenney is artist-in-residence at Lux Art Institute. Kenney leaves Feb. 8, but enjoy his “Southern Gothic” works until Mar. 8.

  • January 11: David Adey created and then deconstructed a 3D scan of his entire body to make this piece, found alongside other mixed-media works in David Adey: Hither and Yon. His body is a wonderland at Scott White Contemporary Art, at least until March 1.

  • January 31: The 39th Annual Small Image Art Show in the Spanish Village Art Center features works of art measuring no more than 10 inches in any direction. The show can be (barely) seen until Mar. 2.

  • February 1: In Function and Fantasy—Steven and William Ladd, the Ladd brothers incorporate beads, fabric, and boxes to create “abstract or conceptual folk art.” At Mingei through June 1.

  • March 2014: Huyler Chocolates—A Marketing Design Story features relics from the late 1800s and early 1900s, when the Huyler family was one of the best-known makers of chocolate in America. At Mingei, until Aug. 2014.

  • March 20: Autobiographical paintings by Jarmo Mäkilä go on display at Lux Art Institute, where he’ll be artist-in-residence until Apr. 12. The artwork stays up until May 24.

  • March 29: American painter Robert Henri spent six weeks absorbing culture at the actual Prado in Spain. See what the man came away with when you attend Spanish Sojourns: Robert Henri and the Spirit of Spain at San Diego Museum of Art, through Sept. 9, 2014.

  • Spring 2014: The San Diego Museum of Art’s biggest annual fundraiser, Art Alive, exhibits famous works accompanied by their floral interpretations. Don’t miss the opening celebration and other Art Alive festivities.

  • May 2014: Re-re-re-remix! Photographers celebrate the 60th anniversary of photography nonprofit Aperture. Reimagined images from Aperture publications take the spotlight at MOPA until Oct. 2014, in Aperture Remixed.

  • May 31: View masterpieces by widely unknown Spanish-born painter Joaquîn Sorolla y Bastida during Sorolla in America. His work will be at the San Diego Museum of Art, through Aug. 26, 2014.

  • June 2014: The Mingei’s Surf Craft—Design and Innovation in the Evolution of Board Riding explores the creation of surfboards under guest curator Richard Kenvin, local board shaper and surfer. Catch the exhibit before Jan. 2015.

  • June 5: Beverly Penn begins her stint as resident artist at Lux Art Institute. She leaves the studio July 5, but see her work on display anytime before July 26.
