5 Kid Fests!
This month's got festivals and events galore for the small fry in your family
1. Family Movie Night
Bring your budding movie critics out to Stagecoach Community Park for a night of food, cinema, and silliness. Before you spread out your blankets and lawn chairs for an outdoor showing of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the 1971 version), treat your family to hot dogs, nachos, funnel cakes, ice cream, and more. Just be sure to do it after hitting the giant slide and bounce house. Wristbands are $5. Event begins at 5:00 p.m.; movie begins at 7:30 p.m.
September 15, Stagecoach Community Park, 3420 Camino de los Coches, Carlsbad
2. Grape Day Parade and Festival
Sometimes you just need to put your foot down—on some grapes! Head out to Grape Day Park for a festival that dates back to 1908. Don’t miss marching bands, floats, and equestrians in the exciting parade, starting at 9:30 a.m. After the parade down Grand Avenue, walk to the park for grape stomping, sack races, and a fun zone. Also, adults should stop by another type of “fun zone” at the wine and craft beer tasting pavilion.
September 8, Grape Day Park, 321 North Broadway, Escondido
3. Harbor Days
From art exhibits and great food to a Pirate’s Cove exhibition and “Nail ’n’ Sail” competition, you may find yourself experiencing serious indecision at this NoCo event. Sponsored by the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, Harbor Days is free to the public, with shuttles running from various parking locations. For two days, your vocabulary consists only of surf, sand, and sun!
September 29–30, Oceanside Harbor
Free parking and free admission are just a few of the reasons this al fresco fest is always a big hit. View the street art along Armada Drive, and then help your little ones make their own artsy statements. After the sidewalk chalk is all used up, indulge in the Taste of ArtSplash fundraiser, featuring Carlsbad’s restos. Proceeds support the Carlsbad Unified School District.
September 22–23, Armada Drive between Cannon Road and Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad
5. Lima Bean Faire & Cook-Off
Got legumes? The San Diego Heritage Museum hosts its fourth annual Lima Bean Faire & Cook-Off, where, for the first time, other beans (like pinto, navy, and garbanzo) will compete with the lima for the title of Tastiest Bean. Aside from sheer nutrition value, this event features live music, raffle prizes, and plenty of games for the kids.
September 29, 450 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas
