Surf jazz: a weird concept. Jazz is all dark, smoky nightclubs and tortured players. Surf music is sun, bikinis, and hula hoops. But listen to Feeling Hands, the third and most recent disc from San Diego’s The Mattson 2, and you’ll become a believer. In fact, Feeling Hands won “Best Jazz Album” at the San Diego Music Award on August 8th. Made up of twin brothers Jonathan (drums) and Jared (guitar, bass), they make pretty, accessible music whose richly textured melodies deftly lead the mind on a vivid inner journey. Shanghai Mule

Chris Simmons of Smoke & Mirrors Cocktail Co. brings a Far East influence to many of his drinks at Burlap, the “Asian Cowboy”-themed resto from Brian Malarkey. A standout is the Shanghai Mule, a Pan-Asian twist on the Moscow Mule, which uses ginger beer and limejuice. Simmons subs Ty Ku sake and Dolin Rouge sweet vermouth in place of vodka, and adds his own custom blend of Chinese five-spice bitters (five spices: star anise, clove, cinnamon, Szechuan pepper, and fennel seed; bitters: a month-long steeping process for Simmons). “A classic mule uses aromatic bitters, but the sake creates a smoothness, so I needed something to give it a little punch,” says Simmons.
