Shop Like a Tastemaker with Treci Smith

The interior designer divulges her must-haves in home décor this season

Age: 47

Neighborhood: Bonita Current Job: Curator and owner of Treci Smith Designs

Background: Being the youngest of four and having four children of her own—and don’t discount the 15 chickens, two ducks, one rooster, and a pup—Smith has dealt with her share of hand-me-downs. Combining that inevitable affection for thrifting with 18 years working in real estate investment, her eponymous interior design firm and retail ventures repurpose home goods for generations to come. Pick through some of her beatnik finds at Point Loma’s Kurtz Street Vintage Marketplace or follow her on Instagram to stay up to date on her other pop-ups around town. Catch her on HGTV, too; she recently wrapped filming for a new show that will debut in January.

Fashion Philosophy: “Trust your vision and how it makes you feel. Always opt for what evokes fun.”

Personal Style: “I tend to stick to clean, classic lines, offset with a mix of vintage elements, a pop of color, a little texture, and a lick of bohemian.”

Her Picks:

Marc Jacobs Major Volume Mascara gives me movie-star lashes and—bonus!—it doesn’t clump.”

“My Opalhouse round rattan mirror, from Target of all places, centers my living room beautifully. I have it hanging over my fireplace.”

“Whenever my skin’s in need of some extra TLC, I apply my mineral clay mask from The Holistic Science Co. It purifies and makes my skin extra soft.”

$28, Ocean Beach

“This book, The New Bohemians: Cool and Collected Homes by Justina Blakeney, is my bible of bohemian interior design inspiration.”

$25, powells.com

“I love tassels! And you’ll find them on cushions, like Anthropologie’s Tasseled Nadia Pillow, all around my home—the bed, sofas, chairs, everywhere.”

$58, Fashion Valley, Westfield UTC, Forum at Carlsbad

“I adore a rug that looks a little worn. My Rani Rug from West Elm can withstand our family of six, because we spend a lot of time hanging out in our living room.”

$499–$1,399, Mission Valley, Solana Beach

“Nothing beats a cocktail on a summer night while listening to an old soul record on vinyl. We get ours, including my favorite, The Best of Sade, at Fivespace.”

North Park

Jo Malone cologne in Wood Sage & Sea Salt strikes the perfect balance of sensual and earthy.”

$68, Westfield UTC

“My World Market Walnut Midcentury Bar Cart is perfect for parties and displaying my vintage barware.”

“From fruit to flowers, I buy everything fresh from the Hillcrest Farmers Market.”
