Trail of the Month: Rose Canyon Open Space

5 miles for the out-and-back, more if you extend it

Where: There’s an entrance on the west side of Genesee Avenue across the street from University City High School. Follow the dirt path near the train tracks for about 2.4 miles, then either turn around and head up to neighborhood streets via Bloch Street, or continue under Highway 52 to the San Clemente Canyon Trail.

Why We Love It: This hidden path follows the train tracks in the University City neighborhood to produce surprisingly beautiful canyon views. It’s mostly shaded and close to the coast, so you can get your trail running fix without the heat of East County.

Where to refuel afterwards: Take advantage of your location by grabbing dim sum at Jasmine Express (4609 Convoy Street). Or try craft beer and sandwiches at Rock Bottom Brewery (8980 Villa La Jolla Drive).
