Interview with Bitsie Tulloch

Meet the Grimm actress and SD native

Bitsie Tulloch

The name “Bitsie” comes from... my grandfather. My first name is Elizabeth, after my grandma, but Bitsie was actually my grandfather’s (Walter Scott Tulloch) nickname. We were always really close and people started calling me Bitsie when I was a toddler, then after he passed away in 1992 I started using it exclusively in homage to him.

I was able to be born in San Diego because… my mom flew back to SD shortly before I was born because it was important to her that I be a ninth-generation San Diego native. Then I was on a plane to Barcelona when I was only one week old.

St. James Academy in Solana Beach was… the site of my first crush and subsequent heartbreak! I was madly in love with this boy, Michael, from third to fifth grade. He wasn’t having it! I cried for weeks.

My degree from Harvard taught me… more than I have room for in this column! Humility, independence, versatility, etc. but the best thing about Harvard was, and always will be, the other students. They are so impressive. It’s a very creative and inspiring environment.

Being a cast member of The Artist meant… being a part of movie history. The script was amazing and the cast was incredible, but I had no idea the movie would go as far as it did. It was thrilling. To be an actress who’s part of a movie that was an ode to moviemaking—magical!

NBC’s Grimm is a show about… a world in which characters from the Grimm fairy tales exist. At its core, it’s a police procedural but with a sci-fi, fantasy element. I play the girlfriend of the main character, Nick Burkhardt. He basically wakes up one day having inherited the ability to see supernatural creatures.

My beauty regimen consists of… I had a melanoma removed when I was a senior in college. Since then I have literally never gone a day without sunscreen. Rain or shine, I always have at least SPF 30 on my face. I’m also obsessed with beauty products—I tear out pages from every magazine to try out the latest creams, etc. Beauty products and shoes are my indulgences.

The person I visit most often in San Diego is… my grandma, who lives in Del Mar.

My favorite place to get a drink in San Diego is… Jake’s Del Mar.

My San Diego favorite restaurant is… El Indio. It’s my family’s first stop straight from the airport. Great Mexican food.
