Las Patronas hosted the 60th annual Jewel Ball at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Chaired by Wendy Segall, the sold-out “club 6oh!” benefited the American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial County chapter and eight other local charities. Cochairs Kathryn Stephens and Alison Figi reveled with guests, among them Las Patronas president Vicki Eddy, founding member Jo Bobbie MacConnell, incoming president Terry Cooper, Mayor Jerry Sanders and Rana Sampson, Lydia and John McNeil, Sue and Doug Botos, Pam and Jerry Cesak, Maryl and Del Weightman, Susanna Lipe Aalbers and husband John, Cindy and Bob Salvato, Marty and David Pendarvis, Kathy and Scott King, and Ann and Ed Witt.

More than 450 patrons of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation boarded the USS Midway to celebrate the foundation’s 10th anniversary. The reception generated more than $125,000 to support its mission of service to San Diego’s LGBT community. Leon Williams was presented with the inaugural Richard P. Geyser President’s Ethics Award. On deck were David Miles, Richard Sager, Laura Mustari, Roderick Reinhart, David Pierce, Mark Niblack, Michael Mack, Larry Hinman, Walter Lam, Jerry Smithson and Phil Flick, among others.

A Real Ace

In conjunction with the 2006 Acura Classic tennis tournament, held annually at La Costa Resort & Spa, Acura and Promotion Sports hosted a benefit dinner and auction, netting $272,000 for Scripps Polster Breast Care Center. Former Wimbledon champ Pam Shriver emceed; Susie Soll chaired the event, which honored the late journalist and sports marketing executive Irv Grossman (his widow, Tora, accepted the award). Rallying support were Channel 10 anchor and breast-cancer survivor Bill Griffith, U.S. Open champ Kim Clijsters, tennis pro and ESPN commentator Mary Jo Fernandez, Raquel Giscafre, Jane Stratton, Rosemary and Chris Gorder, John Engle, Gary Fybel, Laura Johnson, and Joyce and Jere Oren, among others.

Gaslamp restaurant Acqua al 2 celebrated its sixth anniversary with a “Celebrity Server Night” featuring Padres players and benefiting the Autism Tree Project. The Padres’ Jake Peavy, Adrian Gonzalez, Chris Young, Mike Cameron, Clay Hensley, Josh Barfield and Ben Johnson suited up as waiters, bartenders and chefs to serve the 140 guests, who raised $14,300 for autism research and education. XX Sports Radio (AM 1090) hosts Darren Smith and “Philly Billy” Werndel shared emcee duties.

Concertos & Caviar

La Jolla Music Society’s 20th anniversary SummerFest gala featured a caviar-and-champagne reception, concert, dinner and dancing under the stars at the home of Joan and Irwin Jacobs. Stacy Jacobs was gala chair; Dolly Woo chaired this year’s SummerFest season. SummerFest music director Cho-Liang Lin and LJMS president and artistic director Christopher Beach mingled with the 200-plus patrons, including Joy and Ed Frieman, Sheryl and Harvey White, Tanya and Charles Brandes, Kathleen and Ned Bouymaster, and Betty and Leonard Kornreich.

Opulent jewel collections, world business and government leaders and members of the fine-jewelry industry converged for the 75th anniversary gala of the Gemological Institute of America, headquartered in Carlsbad. Keynote speaker and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright addressed the 1,300 guests. Among them were singer-songwriter Chris Isaak and fine-jewelry industry heavyweights David Yurman, Ralph Destino, Sir Ken Robinson, Nir Livnat, Martin Katz, Nadja Swarovski, Michael Bondanza, Jeanne and Bill Larson, Marion and Lula Halfacre, Brenda and Lee Michael Berg, and Helene Fortunoff.

Pro golfer, 2006 Masters champion and Rancho Santa Fe resident Phil Mickelson and wife, Amy, hosted a $250,000 back-to-school shopping spree for 1,200 area kids at the Murphy Canyon Wal-Mart. The Phil & Amy Mickelson Charitable Foundation’s “Start Smart” program provides school clothing and supplies to needy elementary- school students around San Diego County. Wal-Mart reps John Sablan, Steve Markey and Jo Anne Gutierrez helped the Mickelsons greet the excited shoppers.

The Globe Guilders, which supports the Old Globe’s educational outreach programs, hosted the “Celebrating Couture” luncheon and fashion show at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. Sheryl White served as honorary chair; Carol Hanson was fashion-show chair. Jonathan McMurtry emceed the gathering, attended by more than 600, including Joyce Glazer, Elene Soloman, Pauline Foster, Mary Ann Ginnow, Sally Thornton, Jake Figi, Karen Cohn, Dixie Unruh, Fran Golden, Joyce Nash and Susie Spanos.

Actors Tim Conway and Bob Newhart tended bar with their trademark humor, and more than 25 horse-racing jockeys waited tables at the ninth annual Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey Fund benefit dinner at Pamplemousse Grille in Del Mar. Pamplemousse proprietor and chef Jeffrey Strauss, Bill Strauss and fund executive director Tony DeFranco hosted 150 guests, who raised $52,250 to assist injured jockeys with basic living expenses. Among the riders swapping jerseys for aprons were William Antongeorgi, Martin Garcia, Norberto Arroyo Jr., Aaron Gryder, Paul Atkinson, Michael Baze, Luis Jauregui, Tyler Baze, Omar Berrio, David Nuesch, Brice Blanc, Osman Cedeno, Alex Solis, David Cohen, Danny Sorrenson, John Court, Joe Steiner, Gary Stevens and Fernando Valenzuela.

The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center hosted SKCC Day at the Races, which culminated in the “Jeans for Genes” benefit gala at the Del Mar Racetrack. Among the 275 guests who raised $150,000 for local cancer research efforts were Don Breitenberg and Jeanne Jones, Katherine Kennedy and Robert Horsman, Geri Warnke and Dr. Joe Kennedy, honorary chair Caroline Kimmel, Valerie and Harry Cooper, Iris and Matt Strauss, Mary Curran, John Hawkins, Joyce Gattas, Elaine and Murray Galinson, Sandy and Dr. Mike Murphy, and Colette and Ivor Royston.

The San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architects hosted its 46th annual Design Awards gala at the Neurosciences Institute. AIA San Diego executive director Libby O’Malley and president Bob Noble were joined by industry professionals for the ceremony recognizing outstanding local architects, who this year included Graham Downes, Jennifer Luce, Randy Hanna, Matt Wells, Jim Brown and Sebastian Mariscal. Gordon Chong was emcee; the panel of judges were Anne Fougeron, Michael Palladino, Thomas Hacker and Gwendolyn Wright.
