A Tribute to the Military

In time for Veteran's Day, we're putting a face to this heroic community. From a by-the-numbers breakdown of our military members to the businesses that employ and help veterans transitions after duty—plus what they wish civilians knew.

By Kai Oliver-Kurtin and Jamie Reno

Bet you didn’t know that San Diego County has the largest concentration of military personnel in the world. Over a quarter of a million retired service members call San Diego their home, while our active duty men and women continue to make multiple deployments—amplifying PTSD diagnoses in unprecedented numbers and increasing their odds of injury—in what has become the longest war in American history. Yet the war hardly makes front page news anymore. Local veterans and their families struggle with isolation, the transition to civilian life, and finding employment. They often must fight to get the benefits they need. We say it’s time to start a conversation about our brave friends and neighbors who have served our country.
