What is our Big Ideas Party?

We will kick off 2017 among a glittering group of bright minds who’ll share their ideas from our January issue. Want to learn how San Diego is using urban planning for our ocean? Quickly developing affordable drugs? Addressing childhood stress in school curricula? Making it possible to live in Little Italy for $1,500 a month? Join us for fascinating discussions and mingle among our idea labs where the big ideas come to life through interactive displays. Councilmember Barbara Bry will join us to share her unique perspective on innovation, drawing from her experience launching startups, as an entrepreneur, and working in management at one of San Diego’s largest companies.

The new Tap Trailer by Fab Trailers will serve up local craft brews plus photo booths and a special photo op with Fox Sports’ robot, Cleatus will leave you with plenty of memories of an evening well spent. At Brian Malarkey’s Farmer & The Seahorse, expect bites, beverages, breakthroughs, and general all-around brilliance at this third-annual event.

This event is 21+.

Inspiring Speakers

Steven Dinkin
President, National Conflict Resolution Center
The zero tolerance system has proven to have zero effect. Enter restorative justice—rather than sending kids off to prison, let’s sit them down with their victim, family, and others involved. Let’s come up with an action plan that holds the offender accountable. And then let’s put the youth back in school so he can avoid the school-to-prison pipeline. Dinkin’s Center has developed training programs for inclusive communication and informal mediation, not just for schools but also community centers, government employees, and more. Conflict resolution is catching on from San Diego to the rest of the country and beyond, and in these contentious times, nothing can be more critical.

Jacqueline Isaac
Attorney at Law and Vice President, Roads of Success
Newsflash: San Diego County has taken in more refugees than any other region in California for the past seven years. What kind of mental shape are they in—especially the young ones? Attorney and volunteer extraordinaire Jacqueline Isaacs has made several trips to refugee camps in the Middle East, and has launched successful programs for San Diegans to mentor and model the next generation of would-be professionals. “These kids have seen so much—the trauma can be really dangerous if they don’t have the right mentorship.” Let’s pair an aspiring dentist with a local dentist, and so on. She has a lot of ideas about how you can help—just ask.

Sarah Mesnick
Ecologist, Southwest Fisheries Science Center; NOAA Fisheries
San Diego is emerging as a sustainable seafood model for the rest of the world. We have world-class marine scientists, talented fishermen, award-winning chefs, and educated consumers. This unique combo makes so much possible.Example: Scripps is pairing biologists with chefs so they can learn directly from one another in the kitchen. Cross-industry ocean-to-table events are bringing awareness, ideas, and good food to experts and consumers. Mesnick will talk about making San Diego the leading city for sustainable seafood..

Plus, a special guest appearance by Councilwoman Barbara Bry.
