Tijuana’s Balboa Park

Okay, it’s not in a park. But the center’s packed with culture.

Published:

Just a mile from the San Ysidro border crossing sits Centro Cultural Tijuana, the city’s hub for fine art, film, theater, music, dance, and festivals. Better known by its acronym, CECUT reigns as the most important cultural institution in northern Mexico after MARCO in Monterrey, with more than 1 million visitors annually. Celebrating its 32nd year, it boasts a performance hall, botanical garden, cinema, aquarium, and amphitheatre. Most notable: La Bola (The Ball) is a 300-seat IMAX theater that screens nature films and laser light shows to the tune of Radiohead, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson. El Cubo (The Cube) features more than 16,000 square feet of exhibition space, part of a $9 million expansion in 2008 designed by local architect Eugenio Velázquez. The Museum of the Californias is a collection of some 200 historical artifacts belonging to both Baja California and its American counterpart. Paseo de los Heroes 9350, Zona Rio. Open daily.
