Exhibition

Behold, America!

From the permanent collections of three local whoppers, San Diego Museum of Art, MCASD, and the Timken, emerges a never-done-before exhibition, featuring American artists as well as American-themed works by foreign artists. Look for pieces by present-day celebrity artist Cindy Sherman and beloved classics like Mary Cassatt. November 10 through February 10, 2013.

Words Alive! Luncheon

The annual Words Alive! Luncheon is a local literary tradition. This year, Vanessa Diffenbaugh, author of the New York Times bestseller The Language of Flowers, will be the guest of honor at the Grand Del Mar event. Host Martha Barnette of radio’s A Way With Words will pose questions to the inspiring writer/mother of three (Diffenbaugh has also raised six foster children). Proceeds benefit Words Alive!, a nonprofit that uses literature to enrich the lives of low-income kids, teens, and adults. November 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. wordsalive.org

ArcLight Cinema

Coming soon to a theater near you...

Move over, Cinepolis. ArcLight Cinemas, a Hollywood import, is taking over the top floor of the ol’ Robinsons-May at Westfield UTC. ArcLight’s 14 screens will show new blockbusters as well as classics, indie films, and cult faves—with no commercials beforehand. The seating is reserved, so grab some caramel corn (or a cocktail) from the outdoor café and get comfy in the 25-inch-wide seats with retractable armrests. First showing is The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn—Part 2, at 12:01 a.m. on November 16. Moms of Twihards, enjoy the flick with a side of vodka.
