Jewel Kilcher’s rise to fame has all the makings of a Cinderella story at its finest. The Alaskan-born singer-songwriter grew up yodeling in bars with her father, lived out of her VW van in San Diego, was briefly homeless, and eventually climbed the ranks from coffee shop troubadour to multiplatinum recording artist. Nearly 20 years after the release of her debut album, Pieces of You, contributing writer Gerry Strauss checks in with Jewel, who’s now a mother, happily settled in Nashville with husband Ty Murray, and still enjoying the poetry of everyday life.
