Busting the Yoga Myths

Erin Kate Photography

Are you fascinated by yoga but paralyzed with doubt about the myths and urban legends that surround it? I’ve been doing yoga for many years, and I have yet to be converted into a Birkenstock-wearing hippie. I love my Louboutins. That said, those who knew me “before” yoga say I look younger and seem happier now. I’ll take that and run with it.

Myth: Advanced yogic breathing exercises cause insanity.
Reality: If by “insane” you mean finding yourself in Whole Foods in a zombie-like state purchasing patchouli oil, then you might have a point. Fret not. I still prefer Chanel as my fragrance.

Myth: Tantric yoga is all about sex.
Reality: Tantra is all about channeling the energy of the universe with an aim toward elevating human consciousness. The observance of tantra—including tantric yoga—is rare in the West and most definitely not a common offering at commercial yoga studios. Ritualized sex plays only a small role in the history of tantric practice. Many people have heard that the performer Sting is an expert practitioner of tantric sex. So my answer is: It’s a religion, and Sting is the high priest. No, it’s a myth.

Myth: Yoga is bad for pregnant women.
Reality: It depends. If you are pregnant, you should check with your physician before engaging in many physical activities, including yoga. With the doctor’s approval, find a reputable prenatal yoga class. Prenatal yoga is specifically designed for women in various stages of pregnancy and at different levels of fitness. You might want to rethink the Cirque de Soleil moves (not found in prenatal yoga) ... not fun for Junior.

I hope addressing these fables has clarified what yoga won’t do for you. Here’s what it will do for you: Your breath will be a little deeper, your mind clearer, your heart softer and your body stronger. These are what I often call the gifts of yoga. They are yours to receive.
