Aztec Pride

San Diego State University presented distinguished alumni with the 2006 Monty Award at a ceremony at Cox Arena. Cake Walk

The San Diego Museum of Art celebrated its 80th birthday with a cake ceremony and reception attended by patrons including SDMA executive director Derrick Cartwright, Mayor Jerry Sanders, Tijuana Mayor Jorge Hank Rhon, Toni Atkins, Jerry Horton and Alan Johnson (son of William Templeton Johnson, architect of the museum’s original building).

Ciao, Bella

Italian-inspired décor and entertainment transported guests of “Brava! The Fourth Annual Renaissance Ball” to Milan’s famed La Scala opera house. Benefiting Scripps Clinic and Scripps Green Hospital, the event was held at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine and chaired by Karen Gabsch. Honorary chair Darlene Shiley made the surprise announcement that she and husband Donald would match event proceeds of $227,000, boosting the grand total to $454,000, and give an additional $1 million to the Scripps Clinic Division of Cardiology. Guests included June and Neil Ash, Patty and Rick Back, Stella and Mike Banish, Cheri and John Engle, Barbara and Terry Gooding, Jean Hahn Hardy and John Hardy, and Burl and Bill Mackenzie.

Curtain Call

La Jolla Playhouse’s Center Stage Club hosted its annual membership luncheon at the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Center, welcoming 22 new members, including Mary Lou Fox, Rosemary Logan Rodger, Barbara Lubin, Beth Jacobsen and Carol Sabatini. Artistic director Des McAnuff introduced the Playhouse’s 2006 season to the 70-plus guests. Flight of Fancy

The San Diego Air & Space Museum and the Institute of the Americas presented “The Spirit of Goodwill” gala in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the goodwill flight of the Ecuador III. Jay Leno hosted the event, held in the museum’s Pavilion of Flight. Guests, including Pam Slater-Price and husband Herschel, Nancy and Bill Lennartz, and Melissa and John Bolthouse were joined by honorary chair Sally B. The San Diego Young Professionals Committee hosted a “Moonlight & Mingling” cocktail hour at Stingaree to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego. More than 600 business and civic leaders attended the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce’s annual installation and awards dinner, “Orchestrating Business,” at the Four Seasons Resort Aviara. Michael “Mick” Pattinson was named Businessperson of the Year; Troy Mills, Tim Wrisley and David and Susan Danglard received Entrepreneur of the Year honors. Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Richard Heckmann and Judi Missett; Julie Baker and Gary Hill received the Community Leadership Award.

The National Conflict Resolution Center held its 18th annual Peacemaker Awards dinner and ceremony at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Houston Mayor Bill White and Judge Robert Eckels were honored with the National Peacemaker Award for their role in helping to aid and shelter Hurricane Katrina evacuees. Travis Stocking of the Overcoming Gangs program and “Lost Boys of Sudan” Alephonsion Deng, Benson Deng and Benjamin Ajak received the San Diego Peacemaker Award. Among the 600-plus guests were Roberta and Malin Burnham, Chris Van Gorder, Cary and Bob Svet, Dan Yankelovich and Barbara Lee, Joyce Axelrod and Joe Fisch, Dale and Mark Steele, Liz and Mark Leslie, Harel Montgomery, Tara and Steve Dinkin, and Bobbie and Jon Gilbert.

Bobby Ross, the coach who took the San Diego Chargers to Super Bowl XXIX, was honored as the 2006 Legend of the Year. More than 550 guests, including emcees Larry King and Ryan Seacrest, host of American Idol, enjoyed a noche in Spain at the Kids Korps USA “Viva Espana!” gala at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Flamenco dancers entertained patrons, who included Kids Korps founders Joani Wafer and Dawn Lehman, National Leadership Award honorees Cheri Myron and Joanne and David Wolf, gala chairs Connie and Bill McNally and committee chairs Marian Benassi, Stephanie Kourie and Tiffany Mahoney.
