Up with Switchfoot

Locally born and bred, Switchfoot has achieved international acclaim. But the group is also known for charity work——simpatico with the pop band’s spiritually expressive lyrics. The group joined U2 frontman Bono to promote AIDS awareness and debt relief for developing nations. This month, they return to their wave-riding roots (the band name is a surfing term for the rider’s stance). The Switchfoot Bro-Am is a surfing contest and concert to raise money and awareness for Care House, an organization serving homeless teens and young moms. The kids will be given a day at the beach, complete with shoes, clothes, surfing and guitar lessons. (May 13, 7-3, Moonlight Beach, Pacific Coast Hwy. 101, Encinitas; switchfoot.com/bro-am.)
