From Russia with Love
by Don Braunagel
La Jolla Playhouse’s Page to Stage program, which takes plays from workshop to full production, has racked up remarkable results. Two of its one-man shows——2001’s inaugural,
I Am My Own Wife, and 2004’s 700 Sundays——moved to Broadway and Tony-winning success. Now the Playhouse is set to debut the first full PtS-developed musical,
Zhivago. Adapted by Michael Weller from
Doctor Zhivago, Boris Pasternak’s classic novel of tragic romance amid the Russian Revolution, the production is directed by Des McAnuff and features music from Lucy Simon (
The Secret Garden) and lyrics by Michael Korrie and Amy Powers. The bare-bones version was presented last summer, with audience feedback invited. SDSU grad Ivan Hernandez, fresh from the New York City Opera production of
The Most Happy Fella, plays Zhivago; he’s shown here with Jessica Burrows, who plays Lara. (May 10–June 25, Mandell Weiss Theatre, UCSD, 2910 La Jolla Village Dr., La Jolla, 858-550-1010;
