Getting Botox for the first time can be a very rewarding experience. Feel younger and more vibrant. Dr. Reza Tirgari of Avalon Laser answers some of the most commonly asked questions that they hear in their San Diego offices.

1.  Who should get Botox?

Botox is appropriate for almost anyone. Younger people often opt for Botox as a preventive measure, while older adults often find that the effect of reducing or eliminating existing wrinkles is highly desirable.

2. Are there any contraindications to getting botox?

There are a few medical conditions for which getting botox would be considered inadvisable. For example, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis and similar conditions are considered contraindications. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are also not considered appropriate candidates, as are people who are on blood-thinning medications.

3. How long does botox last?

Botox generally lasts about 3-4 months as long as appropriate amounts are used, although this can vary from person to person.

4. What areas can be treated with Botox?

The most common areas are typically the frown lines, the forehead and the crow’s feet. In the hands of advanced practitioners such as at Avalon Laser, areas such as the lips, peri-oral and also jaw muscles can be effectively treated for a variety of conditions. Botox can be used to slim the jawline and reduce excessive tooth grinding. It is also commonly used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) in the armpit.

5. Are there any dangers to botox?

In the hands of an experienced and conscientious practitioner, Botox is especially safe and effective.

6. How does botox work?

Botox inhibits the nerve from stimulating the corresponding muscle which leads the muscle to relax. This is how wrinkles are reduced. Over time, with continued usage, the muscle may also shrink in size which reduces wrinkles even further.

7. Can Botox be done at the same time as other procedures?

After getting Botox, we generally recommend waiting at least 1-2 weeks before any other cosmetic procedures, e.g. lasers, peels, facials, etc., are done to avoid any potential complications.

8. How can I choose a Botox provider?

Make sure your Botox is done at an established practice and by a skilled, experienced practitioner. You should have all of your questions answered during a preliminary consultation to decide if Botox is right for you. If the practitioners are certified by Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, that is also a big plus.

9. I don’t want to look “overdone”.  How can I avoid that?

An experienced practitioner will always discuss your personal preferences and needs in advance of any treatment. Avalon Laser has perfected the art of producing beautiful, natural results and has received rave reviews from its clients.
