San Diego Senior Living Spotlight

Helpful resources and lifestyle options for San Diego's over-55 set

With its mild climate, pristine coastline, and abundant sunshine, San Diego has long been a haven for retirees. Whether you are looking for an active senior community, wanting to stay fit, or seeking to connect with others who share your interests and hobbies, this guide will help you make the most of the proverbial “golden years.”

Fitness Over 55

It’s never too late to make exercise and fitness a priority. According to WebMD, physical activity can help tame menopause symptoms, lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes, and, of course, help you look and feel your best. Here are some tips to get you moving:

  • Adopt a dog and take it for walks every day.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Keep comfortable walking shoes on hand for impromptu strolls.
  • Find a sport, game, or activity you like and find others who will hold you accountable.
  • Stay flexible. Stretching is good for muscles and joints. Try yoga or Pilates.

San Diego—Where the Living is Easy

Choosing where to retire can be a daunting prospect. A few communities worth checking out include Wesley Palms, which celebrated the opening of brand-new patio homes with an iconic mid-century design aesthetic on 35 acres of parkland overlooking the ocean on Soledad Mountain Road in Pacific Beach. The community is one of four award-winning options owned and operated by Front Porch, a not-for-profit organization that’s been serving the community of San Diego for over 100 years. Just a mile from the ocean is Fredericka Manor in Chula Vista, featuring quaint cottages on tree-lined streets. The community completed an award-winning renovation last year and is scheduled to open a new memory care neighborhood, Summer House, in the coming months. Casa de Mañana enjoys spectacular oceanfront views on Coast Boulevard in La Jolla. The historic charm of the mission-style architecture frames the contemporary villas and well-appointed apartment homes. Up the coast is Carlsbad By The Sea, a continuing care retirement community on the ocean in quaint Carlsbad Village.

More information on these and other Front Porch communities can be found at fpretirement.net.

Convenience is Key

As you get older, having conveniences close to home becomes even more important. The good news is, many retirement communities come replete with beauty salons, dry cleaners, grocery stores, fitness facilities, and more. Make a list of what’s important to you and look for communities that meet your current and future needs. For example, at Seacrest Village in Encinitas and Rancho Bernardo, residents enjoy everything from an on-site movie theater and library to chauffeured transportation and a weekly happy hour.
