Hervé Koubi’s Most Recent Work Comes to UC San Diego

The French choreographer's Ce Que Le Jour Doit A La Nuit fuses capoeria with street dance

By Sarah Pfledderer

Drawing inspiration from his Algerian and Mediterranean roots, celebrated French choreographer Hervé Koubi brings his most recent work, Ce Que le Jour Doit à la Nuit (What the Day Owes to the Night), to UC San Diego’s Mandeville Auditorium this month.

The physically demanding routine sees his 12-person troupe fusing capoeira—the Afro-Brazilian dance/martial art hybrid—with contemporary street styles, backflips, and head spins set to a mix of Bach, Nubian composer Hamza El Din, and traditional Sufi music. Following the show, stick around for an ArtTalk with the performers.
