SAN DIEGO OR BUST: Bloomingdale's celebrated the highly anticipated opening of its Fashion Valley store with a private charity reception benefiting the Alzheimerís Association, La Jolla Playhouse and Voices for Children. Bloomingdale's chairman and CEO Michael Gould and store general manager Cathy Muhlenforth greeted guests, including honorary chairs Debby Jacobs, Patsy and David Marino and Rana Sampson.

BIG APPETITE:
Nearly 700 of the city's top business and community leaders attended the 44th annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County gourmet dinner. Jim Cimino was honored as Man of the Year at the benefit event, attended by a crew of Chargers players and bestselling author and businessman Stedman Graham. Frank Creede chaired.

ROOKIES TO THE RESCUE: The John Brockington Foundation presented the fifth annual Pro Athletes for Life dinner to benefit the National Kidney Foundationís Emergency Patient Fund. Hosted by 1971 NFL Rookie of the Year John Brockington and 1972 NFL Rookie of the Year Willie Buchanon, the event was chaired by Diane Brockington.

SWEET CHARITY: San Diego Magazine hosted its seventh annual Charitable Events Registry Celebration featuring The Art of Giving awards presentation. Honorees included Monarch School (Nonprofit Organization of the Year), Union Bank of California (Philanthropic Business of the Year), Gail and Marty Levin (Community Volunteers of the Year) and Ernest Rady (Philanthropist of the Year).

WORTH A TRI: World-class athletes and celebrities teamed up for the San Diego Triathlon Challenge, the major fund-raiser for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Relay-team participants included actor Robin Williams, cycling legend Jim Ochowitz, actress Alexandra Paul, Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard and actor David James Elliot, among others.

COUTURE TOUR: Prominent New York fashion designer Nicole Miller made an appearance at two local charity benefits showcasing her designs. The "Strolling for Justice" event at the Wells family estate in Poway benefited the Toby Wells Foundation; another private shopping event at the Rancho Santa Fe home of Linda and Tom Sansome benefited the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

GEOMETRY RULES: The University City Foundation for Public Schools presented the 13th annual Taste of the Triangle benefit dinner, featuring gourmet cuisine from the city's finer restaurants. San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Carl Cohn was the special guest; Elizabeth Murray and Laurel Slater chaired.

LIGHT IT UP: The Gaslamp Quarter Association honored local businesses and individuals at the 2006 Lamplighter Awards. Chaired by Dante Barron and Laurie Peters, the event benefited the Gaslamp Quarter Association Business Improvement District. The association represents more than 380 businesses in the 16-block historic district of downtown San Diego.

BACK ATCHA: The Association of Fundraising Professionals marked National Philanthropy Day with a reception honoring San Diegans who give back. Chaired by E. Douglas Dawson, Pamela Whitcomb and Charles E. Day, the event recognized the charitable contributions of the Hervey family, Frank Arrington, Junior League of San Diego, Jessica Roach, Wells Fargo Bank, Kristy Gregg, Tommy Sablan and The Jeff & Jer Showgram, and the Jewish Community Foundation.
