A Fine, Fine Redesign

Look at us.

Each January, the magazine picks 50 People To Watch. This annual feature is always a worthy, eclectic and diverse mix. Definitely keep an eye on the class of 2004. But—ta da!—a few words about us, and why we’re worth keeping an eye on, too.

Last year, we sifted through feedback from numerous reader focus groups. You told us the magazine didn’t need an overhaul. You like us—but wouldn’t mind refining us. Whew. So we decided to get a little more hip—without the hop.

There are a few new things under the hood. Look for more coverage of automobiles, home design and news from the medical front. The magazine also now offers vastly expanded food and local events sections.

You also wanted more from the editor-in-chief; so look for the monthly Dialogue with Tom Blair. Our dulcet-toned chief will tête-à-tête with all sorts of newsmakers, starting with former San Diego playmaker Junior Seau.

In getting ready for our unveiling, we conferred with some superior design consultants. Some tinkering was done with section headlines. But fear not! You won’t get lost. Our art department—the hardest-working art department in show business, ladies and gentlemen—has achieved the proverbial “more with less.” More art. Slightly fewer words. New fonts. Let your fingers do the walking. The views are fantastic.

There’s not enough room to adequately thank everyone—internally and externally—who helped us achieve our new look. Suffice it to say, no suggestion was disregarded—except one of mine (but hiring a full-time staff masseuse is, in hindsight, not the best allocation of company resources).
