Sweet Spot: San Diego-Made Marshmallow Pops

A local couple turns the basic marshmallow into a gourmet pop

After seeing hand-dipped marshmallows at an L.A. market, San Diego-based Michelle Johnson and her husband, Greg, wanted to try making their own pillow-soft marshmallows with a cool twist. The result is Shuga, a new line of gourmet marshmallow pops that mix in creative toppings like espresso (using local roasters, like James Coffee Co.), Fruity Pebbles cereal, and graham crackers (for s’mores!).

Shuga uses chocolate from a sustainably minded, family-owned company in Colombia and pulls ingredients from local purveyor Specialty Produce. This month they’re offering a gift box of cocoa or strawberry marshmallows coated in dark chocolate. Sweets for your sweetie!
