San Diego’s reigning queen of dessert


Neighborhood: Mission Hills
Current project: Owner and chef of Extraordinary Desserts
Background: The San Diego native studied pastry-making at Le Cordon Bleu and returns to France regularly to train with the masters at Lenôtre and Bellouet Conseil culinary school. But Karen’s travels to exotic places are what truly inspire her creative desserts.
Design philosophy: I am drawn to contemporary (cement, glass, and steel), with a splash of Asian antiques and natural wood to warm the space up. What you see at Extraordinary Desserts is also what moves me at home.
Personal style: Sometimes sophisticated, sometimes fun, and always over-budget.

Weimaraners! We have a minimum of one and maximum of three for our household. They are loyal, intelligent, protective, active, and always provide an entertaining mix of comedy and drama.

A vodka tonic at the end of a long day can do wonders. My favorite is Hawaiian Vodka, distilled from sugar cane and filtered through lava. We always bring a bottle back in our luggage.

Paris is always on my mind. Currently, my two favorite spots are the Marché Biologique outdoor market on Sundays and Terroir Parisien contemporary bistro.
