DRINK THIS: Crazy In Love Martini

For Valentine’s Day, you can’t get more romantic than Bertrand at Mister A’s, which recently shook up its cocktail program. New mixologist Shawn Barker—an SD native who’s designed drink menus for multiple Wolfgang Puck joints, including Cut and Spago—follows the farm-to-glass philosophy. That means fresher ingredients and more juices and mixers made from scratch. For this month’s special-occasion sipper, he melted down Red Hots candies into a cinnamon syrup, a less abrasive alternative to commercial cinnamon liqueurs. He shakes it with Ketel One vodka, Calvados apple brandy, and fresh lemon juice to make the sweet but not cloying Crazy In Love martini. For gents, he offers a slightly more masculine version that swaps vodka for Buffalo Trace bourbon and is served on the rocks. It’s the manliest pink drink you’ve ever sipped.
