1. We told San Diego to keep an eye on you in 2012… So, what have you been up to? I am continuing my open government work as president of Californians Aware. We have introduced a ballot measure for amending the San Diego City Charter and are working on statewide legislation. I am still trying to figure out how to relate information about men in positions of power who talked a good game when they condemned Bob Filner, but engage in the same sort of behavior themselves. I suspect time is not on their side.
2. If you were rounding up a People to Watch list for 2014, who would you include and why? I would include attorneys Cory Briggs and Marco Gonzalez because they have the courage of their convictions, as well as the founding member of Run Women Run, Barbara Bry, because she is passionate about supporting women and the causes that are important to our quality of life. I would include Councilmember David Alvarez, not just because he is running for mayor, but because he is a rare and unique individual who is making a difference.
I would also include the people of Barrio Logan because they are determined to have a meaningful role in decisions that impact the quality of life for themselves and their children. Also on my list would be Ben Katz, Gabriela Dow, Eric Busboom, Jerry Hall, Jeff Johnson, Jed Sundwall, Seth Hall, Eric Engleman and Ari Isaak because they are working to make it easier for the public to obtain data and participate in government decision making. I would include attorney Sarah Boot and teacher Carol Kim because, as relative newcomers to politics, both are demonstrating the importance of having more women run for office in our city. Lastly, I would nominate assemblymember Toni Atkins and Council President Todd Gloria, because they have shown grace under pressure when they assumed the role of acting mayor (Atkins when Dick Murphy resigned and Gloria when Filner resigned).
3. Do you have any funny stories about your experience being on our list? In 2005, Dick Murphy and I were listed together; last year, Bob Filner and I were listed together. (Our pictures were side by side.) Shortly after appearing on the list, both ended up resigning as mayor. Not very funny for them, but interesting.
