Where will you spend your New Year’s Eve?

What in the Dickens!
In Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. But when Impro Theatre takes the stage at North Coast Rep to perform its UnScripted Carol, the miserly misanthrope may get a visit from the Avon Lady. Or the Tooth Fairy. Or maybe a chatty neighbor bearing fruitcake.
Impro’s UnScripted Carol might not even include the Scrooge character. No one knows what the show will be about until the curtain goes up—not even the actors. The Dickens-style plays are created on the spot based on audience suggestions.
About a dozen times a year, Los Angeles-based Impro Theatre visits North Coast Rep to perform its improvised plays in classic styles. Their eclectic repertoire includes interpretations of William Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, Jane Austen, Film Noir, Spaghetti Western, Stephen Sondheim, and Anton Chekhov.
This month, the cast will create unique, full-length shows that would have Dickens rolling in his grave laughing. Or else sending his ghost to haunt us. // Jen Coburn
