Very Important Taco: Fish Taco at El Toro Del Cerro Taco Shop

Exploring an oasis in the Mexican food desert north of SDSU

By Dan Letchworth

The suburbs north of SDSU are a Mexican food desert, so we were stoked when the taco shop near Windmill Farms reopened this year under new management. El Toro Del Cerro is a modern, casual spot brightened by personal touches, like kendama toys for sale to keep the little ones occupied, and rows of adorable miniature cacti. The plants aren’t the only succulent part, of course.

Fish tacos seldom benefit from tinkering with the classic formula, and they’re satisfying in simplicity here: shredded cabbage, diced tomatoes, and a whopping portion of lightly battered fish, topped with a sour cream, mayo, black pepper, and ranch crema in a corn tortilla that’s made on-site. At only $2.50 during Taco Tuesday nights, you might want to bring a wheelbarrow.
