La Vida Vegan: A Slice of Pizza Heaven

By Odette Cressler

The Dish: Soyrizo, butternut squash, and Yukon potato pizza

The Spot: Zia Gourmet Pizza, 3311 Adams Avenue, Normal Heights

The Scene: Located in the heart of the Adams Avenue business district, Zia is casual, and what first stood out was the big smile that greeted us. The owner, Khaled, was very welcoming and immediately started describing all of the vegan pizzas in detail when I mentioned my plant preference. The friendly service definitely adds an element of warmth to the space.

Recipe for Success: The combination of the ingredients is well thought out, striking all the right textures. The Soyrizo and tomato sauce blend into a thick creamy layer that serves as the base for the toppings—the butternut squash and Yukon potatoes. The Soyrizo’s mild spiciness is a perfect contrast to squash’s sweetness and the buttery potatoes, while the homemade crust is evenly crispy on the outside and soft inside. Zia also has a great craft beer selection; a slice and pint cost less than $10. Pizza perfect!
