The Judges

Brandon Hernandez

Local food writer Hernandez penned this magazine's definitive guide to Mexican food in 2010 and has been featured on the Food Network.

Jerome Stehly

A third-generation avocado farmer, Stehly has served as the California Avocado Commission chairman.

Mike Nicoud

Blogger for crapieat.com, Nicoud is a lawyer by day and foodie by night. He says the profession helps him foot all his restaurant bills.

Victor Jimenez

Mexican-born Cowboy Star chef, who specializes in New American cuisine, is a graduate of Paris' Le Cordon Bleu.

Erin Jackson

The San Diego Magazine food writer is also a regular contributor at seriouseats.com, and takes her guac seriously.

The Results

Guacamole WINNER: Casa de Pico
The La Mesa eatery took top honors. “All of them tasted fresh, but this one tasted really balanced; the avocado really came through,” Jackson said. Stehly agreed: the Casa de Pico recipe “wasn’t overpowered with lemon or lime.”
RUNNER-UP: El Vitral

CHIPS WINNER: El Indio
Founded in 1940, El Indio has served a number of sitting presidents, and catered former Governor Pete Wilson’s 1991 inauguration. The restaurant’s chips were by far the most flavorful of the bunch, and fared much better than their guac.
RUNNER-UP: El Vitral
