Will Bike for Waffles

By Archana Ram

Biking and beer converge this month at one of cycling’s most unique events. San Marcos’s Lost Abbey brewery will serve as the hub for the fifth annual Cervélo Belgian Waffle Ride on April 24, when more than 1,000 cyclists will spin through the notoriously grueling race named in honor of Belgium, the country long considered the epicenter of pro cycling. The 144-mile race, which includes a 68-mile “Wafer Ride” option, traverses gravel, dirt, and rocky sections of rural North County, with climbs reaching up to 11,000 feet.

Another nod to its Euro counterpart? Pre- and post-race waffle feasts as well as Belgium-inspired ales after the finish line. Even nonriders can indulge in the carbo-loading for $27 each. On your mark, get set, waffle!
