Weekly Staff Picks: From Cupcakes to Cheesesteaks
Cupcakes and Cheesesteaks? It's time for this staff to jump on the treadmill. Find out why.
Wine Bar:
Walk past the line at Hodad’s and head to The Vine in Ocean Beach. Not only does it have an awesome selection of bottled microbrews and eccentric wines, The Vine also has an amazing burger! Served on a ciabatta-style roll with caramelized onions and smoked cheddar, this gourmet style burger is sure to cure your craving and keep you coming back for more.

Museum:
Balboa Park’s Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is always worth a visit for hands-on fun with the painlessly educational exhibits and/or an IMAX film or two on the newly refurbished dome theater’s screen. But this week Hubble — the tale of the Hubble Space Telescope — opens and makes that visit even more worthwhile. Nothing like seeing our planet from space to make you appreciate it all the more!

Burger:
Rocky’s Crown Pub is to the point. The menu consists of its famous burger, fries and beer. Try a cheeseburger with grilled onions and make sure to bring cash (or use the ATM across the street).

Philly Cheesesteak:
Though Gaglione Brothers’ origins are completely local, this is as close as our Philadelphia-native staff member has found to a Philly cheesesteak in Southern California. The sandwiches come in a variety of sizes and ingredients. The bread is fresh baked and delicious. Be warned, they take pride in offering their food as an indulgence, so you won’t find healthy alternatives on the menu here.

Cupcakes:
This staff member indulged in the best cupcake he’s ever tried from Waters Fine Catering, located on Morena Boulevard near University of San Diego. Waters Fine Catering “To Go” offers everything from fresh pastas and other fine foods to delicious sandwiches. Every day there’s a new cupcake invention, from Oreo cookie cupcakes to hot chocolate cupcakes.

Reader Comments:
I too loved Gaglione Bros. from the moment I tried them, but now since finding Alex's and Eddie's I haven't been back to G Bros. since. Alex's Brown Bag located on the botttom floor of the 5th Ave. Financial building (between 4th and 5th on Maple) gets an A+++++ for their cheesesteaks the best hands down. (these guys are from Philly) and 2nd place has to go to Eddie's Philadelphia located @ 3501 30th St. Awesome cheesesteaks, the fries are to die for, and they a nice selection of beers on tap, and big screen TV's for enjoying sports. Both of these places have Tastykake, and Cheesewhiz.
TASTYKAKE!? I'm going to try it this weekend. Thanks for the tip!
