Magazine Times Two

In retail marketing, they call it a “twofer”—two for the price of one. In journalistic parlance, there is no name for it. But it’s still a pretty spectacular deal.

In the January issue, San Diego Magazine brought you the first edition of Home Design Quarterly—a magazine-within-the-magazine devoted to the best in regional architecture and design. And you liked us; you really liked us. So much so that this month, our second edition of HDQ is its own magazine—an expanded stand-alone accompanying our regular April issue.

Co-editors Tom Shess and Margie Farnsworth have struck a chord with readers and design professionals. All agree our new sister publication is lively, informative and—thanks to the formidable talents of art director Laurie Miller—something beautiful to behold. It deserves its own spot on your coffee table, alongside its big brother.

Speaking of the big kid, you seem to like our redesigned and reinvigorated flagship publication, too. This month’s issue should be no exception. Leading the parade of features and columns is a story about 10 “Perfect Weekends” in San Diego, which may sound a bit redundant. We follow a diverse group of locals as they fashion their own ideas of the best way to spend a weekend in their hometown paradise.

Reporter Jamie Reno catches up with presumptive Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, who reminisces about his love affair with San Diego. In “An End of Innocence,” Kerry recounts his time here in the late 1960s, between Navy tours in Vietnam, when he was holed up in an apartment in north Mission Beach, embracing the beach life and his own idea of extreme sports.

A newcomer to our stable of writers, Nicole Sours Larson, takes a close look at another Navy veteran, the U.S.S. Midway, as it begins a new tour of duty as a San Diego–based floating museum. Will it float financially? Photographer Tim Mantoani presents a pictorial ode to our local firefighters. And business editor Larry Edwards looks at local companies cashing in on the camera-phone craze.

Also this month: In his Journal, executive editor Ron Donoho takes us behind the scenes into the sweaty world of mayoral TV debates; in Dialogue, Padres CEO Dick Freeman talks about the new downtown ballpark and, we hope, a reinvigorated ballclub; and Thomas K. Arnold travels to Santa Barbara, where not much has changed since his first visit 40 years ago.

There’s twice as much to savor with April’s twin issues of San Diego Magazine and Home Design Quarterly. Double your pleasure.
