The men and women on the front lines of the October firestorms rightly took the spotlight for their heroics. Firefighters—some of whose own houses burned to the ground as they bravely fought to save the homes of others—were heralded by the national media: Today, Good Morning America, People and so on. Today, politicians and pundits argue about underfunding, district consolidation and equipment shortages. But our firefighters and paramedics maintain their stoic determination. Every day. Poised for anything to happen at any time, they’re a quiet contingent of guardian angels. And on the following pages, we salute them all.
