Olive You

When you mouth the word, “olive”, it looks like you’re saying “I love”, and I sure do love olives, and olive oil.

Paso Robles-based We Olive just opened its tenth store, and the first in San Diego (1158 Prospect Street in downtown La Jolla). The retail store specializes in artisan-produced olive oil from all over California, offering free tastes of the more than 20 extra virgin olive oils that they carry. They also educate customers about how various factors affect the flavor and quality of olive oil, including things like tree growth conditions, harvest time, milling, and storage.

I stopped in for a tasting that took us from one end of the olive oil spectrum to the other—from buttery, smooth olive oils for dipping to throat-tingling (due to high levels of nutrient-rich phenols) and grassy-flavored varieties that are better used in salad dressings or as a finishing oil.

They sell a few of their signature olive oils in bulk—you can buy refillable bottles—and I took home a delicate, floral Meyer lemon-infused olive oil for drizzling on Caprese salads when tomatoes are back in season. We Olive also sells olive oil-based sauces and condiments, plus some good vinegars—I like the aged balsamic and an orange- champagne vinegar.

The shop plans on hosting olive oil classes and will soon serve wine and a little bit of food. And for the rest of February, We Olive is donating $1 for every 12 oz. bottle of extra virgin olive oil sold to the American Heart Association. www.weolive.com
