Chef vs. Chef: You be the judge!

Where will you be at the next Sunday Night Chef Fight?

Chef vs. Chef: You be the judge!

While everyone was watching the Oscars, I was at a showing of my kind of entertainment—the food-related kind! Sunday Night Chef Fights’ latest match-up, held at the home store Fixtures Living (where I found the cooking range of my dreams), pitted the reigning champion, Chef Geordie Moulios of CinCin Simply Italian against Chef Hanis Cavin of Kensington Grill. Each chef had just 30 minutes to cook four courses featuring the night’s theme ingredients: asparagus, shellfish, banana and bread.

In the end, the younger chef held onto his title and bested the more experienced chef, who might have come out victorious had the clock not run out as he was waiting for the clams to open (they were for last dish). Chef Moulios, whose Poway restaurant grows some of their own produce, won with a delicious shrimp and squid ceviche with citrus and capers and seared scallops on a surprisingly savory banana sauce, though Chef Cavin did a good job with smothered crawfish atop toasted milk bread (a new item from Bread & Cie) and an asparagus bisque topped with a fried oyster.

Get a front-row seat for the next showdown on Sunday, April 3 at 6 p.m. when Chef Moulios takes on another challenger. Or, if you’re up in north county, Sunday Night Chef Fights is launching a series up there starting on Sunday, March 20, featuring Chef Joey Maggiore of Tommy V's Urban Kitchen and Tuscany Ristorante in Carlsbad against Chef Kurtis Habecker from the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort.
