Beer is darn delicious on its own but when matched properly with the right food, it’s as if there exists no better beverage. Here are some picks for the top beer and food pairing dinners scheduled for San Diego Beer Week; you can see the entire line-up here.
Monday, November 8: Last year’s Beer Week dinner at Ba Ren, a Chinese restaurant in Clairemont that specializes in fiery Szechuan cuisine, was so successful that some beer and spicy food-loving friends and I thought we’d organize another, this time at our favorite Thai restaurant, Sab E Lee in Santee. Though this dinner is already sold out, the menu and beer pairings, which include beers from Alpine and AleSmith, are posted online so that you can create your own beer dinner there, any time of year.
If I wasn’t going to be at Sab E Lee on Monday, I’d be at Home Brew Mart in Linda Vista, which is also the location of one of Ballast Point two breweries. From 5 to 7 p.m., farm-to-table restaurant on wheels, MIHO Gastrotruck, will be parked outside the store and serving up their regular street food menu as well as a special food item to be paired with Ballast Point’s gold medal-winning Fathom India Pale Lager. For dessert, Ballast Point’s neighbor, Fiji Yogurt, is mixing up a batch of frozen yogurt with the brewery’s coffee-flavored porter, Victory at Sea. http://sdbw.org/events/1973/
Tuesday, November 9: Urban Solace is hosting their first annual Beer Walkabout at the restaurant from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Chef Matt Gordon will be pairing five courses of food, from cocoa nib-crusted pork belly to porter-infused pot de crème, with two beers each from five breweries, including Anchor Brewing and locals Airdale and Green Flash. The $40 ticket includes food, ten tastes of beer and a beer glass from local glassware company BottleHood, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit San Diego Coastkeeper. Email email@example.com for tickets.
Wednesday, November 10: Every Wednesday, South Park’s Alchemy restaurant does a great three-course, all-vegetarian menu for $25. During Beer Week, they’re adding on three beer pairings for $10 and also featuring some Beer Week-only special cocktails made with beer, including South Park Punch, which spikes a saison beer with southern comfort and the Skip and Go Naked, a mix of Ballast Point Distillery’s Old Grove Gin, Karl Strauss Golden Lager, house made grenadine and lemon juice.
Thursday, November 11: Chef Christian Graves of Jsix in the Hotel Solamar is going all out for his Beer Week dinner, putting together an $40 per person event that includes tastings from four food stations that center around whole animals - everything from sea bass and crab to roasted pig and goat. Tomme Arthur from The Lost Abbey will be there with four of his beers, plus a bonus fifth beer brewed just for the occasion – a bourbon barrel-aged version of Judgment Day, and large-scale versions of the striking artwork that decorates The Lost Abbey’s bottles will be up on display.
And in North Park, Brewmaster Chuck Silva of Green Flash is organizing another iteration of his popular Progressive Beer Dinner. On Thursday night, five of the San Diego’s best craft beer-centric restaurants (Sea Rocket Bistro, The Linkery, Ritual Tavern, Jayne’s Gastropub and Blind Lady Ale House) will each be offering their own takes on three small plates of food, meant to be paired with three of Green Flash’s beers.
