I LOVE POKE FESTIVAL

May 29, 6-9PM

When I last encountered Nino Camilo, founder of the I Love Poke Festival and author of San Diego’s official map of musubi (Spam sushi), I asked: “So what do you do for a living.” He replied, “Poke and musubi.”  Well-done. Bravo, sir. What started out as a small festival for the ahi-sushi salad—and Hawaiian icon—has evolved into something grand. This year, 12-15 chefs will compete for the title of Pokemon. There will also be traditional Hawaiian plate lunches, Guamanian food, shave ice, you name it.

COST: $55

LOCATION: Bali Hai Restaurant, 2230 Shelter Island Dr.,

“ROCK THROUGH THE AGES”

May 11, 7-10PM

While we’re lucky to be able to consider the “best poke in San Diego,” we should remember that there are those who can’t trifle with such things because they’re busy fighting to live. “Rock Through the Ages” is GTT’s annual fundraiser to raise money for their Transitional Storage Center—where displaced San Diegans can leave their belongings while attending school, going to work, making a life. Food will be from some of the city’s top with chefs like Hanis Cavin (Carnitas Snack Shack), Ryan Johnston (Whisknladle), Jeff Rossman (Terra) and the plucky lobster-chorizo taco gods from Bull Taco.

LOCATION: San Diego Museum of Man, 1350 El Prado, Balboa Park, Balboa Park

Cusp

World Cocktail Day Dinner

May 13th at 7PM

Cusp is the restaurant at Hotel La Jolla. The one with the view of La Jolla that’ll knock your socks off, do that thing with your breath, all that. And their bartender Nate Howell is on our list of San Diego’s Top 20 Bartenders. The man can make a drink, and this seven-course dinner is a showcase of his and chef Donald Lockhart’s skills. Taxi required. Like achiote yellowtail with a pisco-manzanilla sherry creation, charred pork cheek dumplings with star anise-infused vodka and star fruit, etc. Taxi  not required, but strongly advised.

COST: $77

LOCATION: Cusp Dining & Drinks, Hotel La Jolla, 858.551.3620.
