First Look: Mavericks Beach Club

Verant Group opens up a new Baja-inspired play land in Pacific Beach

Published:

P.B. Bar & Grill had quite the legendary run in San Diego’s water-adjacent funland, Pacific Beach. And now the huge space (15,000 square-feet) is open for revelry again. The new concept, Mavericks Beach Club, has five full bars (count them, FIVE), Baja-inspired food for lunch and dinner, banquettes and games and Adirondack chairs and TVs and fire pits and a dance club and eventually block parties and DJs and national touring bands. It is designed to party.

The operator is the Verant Group, who brought barleymash, Tavern, Sandbar, True North, Westroot, The Smoking Gun and Spill the Beans to the city. They’ve done a bang-up job with barleymash, especially, where they’ve garnered a rep for letting chef Kevin Templeton buy sustainable food and make everything from scratch. Handling the design of Maverick’s is one of my personal favorites, bluemotif Architecture (Kettner Exchange, Cowboy Star, Crack Shack).

The menu will be tacos, wings, fish tostadas, bowls, tortas, burritos, burgers, sandwiches (including a veggie). The bar menu has local craft beer, cocktails (the Pineapple Vanilla Margarita has Espolon Blanco, vanilla syrup, fresh lime juice, pineapple juice). You can also get some Black Box wine, bubbles, and even a six pack of beer, a Baja tradition.

It’s going to get loud in here. Check out the visual tour below.
