FIRST LOOK: Supernatural Sandwiches

'Sea to sandwich' kings open first brick-and-mortar

By Troy Johnson

Supernatural Sandwiches—who made their “sea to sandwich” name at local farmers markets, using top-quality product as local as possible—is opening their first brick-and-mortar place today. Owner Tony Nguyen and company have carved out a modest 900 square-foot joint in Miramar (7094 Miramar Rd., #105), which will be open weekdays from 11AM-7PM.

Supernatural buys from Catalina Offshore, one of the top local seafood operations. So top-notch fish goes onto new sandwiches like the “Chimera” (Korean bbq steak with shrimp), “Garuda” (gochujang-marinated Korean bbq chicken w/ kimchee aioli) and a Baja-style seared jalapeno-dusted white fish atop nopales (cactus). They’ll still have the sandwiches that made them local favorites in the first place, including the “Siren” (Mexican white shrimp sautéed in garlic on butter-toasted bun, aioli, tomatoes, white cheddar, hot sauce and fresh local greens). For sides, it’s shrimp garlic fries and togarashi shrimp chips. Desserts will be from Andrea’s Truffles, as well as a macaroon ice cream sandwich from local baker Carol Vo.

Local designer Crystal Fritsch of Violets and Vinegar Design helped them make the strip-mall outpost into a nifty little lair. Instead of yammering on about it, let’s take a look at the first pics.
