Famed Mexican chef Richard Sandoval confirms restaurant in Chula Vista

As SD Mag reported a while back, big-time Mexican chef Richard Sandoval is coming to town for business and family. Sandoval confirmed he'll open the second location of his Venga Venga Cantina & Tequila Bar in Otay Ranch Towne Center later this month. The deal was spearheaded by his cousin and San Diego restaurateur, Pablo Becker. The Chula Vista location has seen a couple of high-end Mexican concepts come and go, including Frida and Becker's own El Vitral. Sandoval's name brings a cachet those spots didn't have, for sure. And my sources have said nothing but good things about chef de cuisine, Marissa Gerlach (most recently at Raya, Sandoval's concept at Ritz Laguna-Niguel).
The original Venga Venga in Snow Mass, Colorado seems right up the one-stop social dining trend (upscale menu, craft cocktails, a "scene" where you can dig in and hang out for a whole night). The design is described as "antiqued tin walls, hand blown glass, metal light fixtures, raw cut woods and custom strap metal mirrors." Menu will include riffs on Mexican classics (tacos, enchiladas, etc.), plus tableside guacamole, queso fundido and the Venga Venga Asada (hangar steak, peppers, rajas, chile morita sauce and sweet corn tamale). Stuffed churros for dessert. They're planning bottomless brunches on Saturdays and Sundays with micheladas, Bloody Marias, house margs and mimosas. And breakfast tacos.
You get the picture. Huge chef, proven track record, reputable chef de cuisine. And since Sandoval lives in Southern California and is partnering with his cousin on the location, figures he'll have a close eye on its success. So far, so pretty damn good.
Venga Venga will be located at 2015 Birch Rd., Suite 710, Chula Vista, CA 91915. https://www.facebook.com/vengavenga.
