Blue Ribbon to open second spot in Hillcrest; El Dorado cocktailers get Indian food

The biggest news is happening over in Hillcrest. Chef Wade Hageman (he of Blue Ribbon Artisan Pizzeria cult in Encinitas) has signed on to take over where Bayu’s Authentic Ethiopian Cuisine left off (530 University Ave., between 5th and 6th). This marks the second Blue Ribbon location for the former white tablecloth chef (he helmed Solana’s ever-dysfunctional Blanca). The only difference is—this spinoff will be called Blue Ribbon Rustic Kitchen, which will have oodles of comfort food but no pizzas. there’ll Sounds like he’s aiming more for comfort food, maybe a sweet spot between Blue Ribbon and his other Encinitas restaurant, The Craftsman New American Tavern.

Maizbaan, an Indian/Pakistani/ Mediterranean restaurant, has recently opened up at 1010 Broadway Downtown. The spot is open 3PM-3AM, seven days a week, with delivery service. It’s sandwiched right between El Dorado Cocktail Lounge and Broadway Pizza…. Poway gets a new restaurant once every sixteen years or so. Which makes Five Guys Burgers and Fries a notable opening. They’re headed into 13301 Poway Rd. (the mall by the movie theater where the police put bullets in a man)…Seaport Oil and Vinegars (809 W. Harbor Drive) looks more like a brewery than olive oil tasting room, with 40 different kinds of oil on tap. Now, they are adding four different wines from San Diego county (no word on which wines yet) that should be available a couple months down the road. The manager says that’ll make them the only wine retailer in Seaport Village, and we’ll just go ahead and trust her on that one since we haven’t been over there in a bit.…  The Coffee Corner (6705 Linda Vista Road) may be Linda Vista’s new hangout. Owner Oscar Marin hopes that his coffee and pastry spot will be a caffeine-infused watering hole for USD students and locals alike. Opening soon…
