Details on Johnny Rivera's plans for the former Brian's American Eatery

We told you about Hash House-A-Go-Go and Tractor Room mad genius Johnny Rivera taking over the legendary late-night joint, Brian's Amercian Eatery. Now more details. The new restaurant will be called Great Maple. If it sounds like the same concept up at Fashion Island—local/seasonal food jazz with killer drinks—it's because that came from Rivera's flux-capacitator brain, too. "I came up with Great Maple for a friend," says Rivera. "So I'm going to evolve it down here—but it won't be some sort of chain thing." San Diego's Great Maple will be more of a French brasserie with a full-scale bakery, specializing in pies and old-timey goods, plus a full-on breakfast deal. Over at the Hash House and Tractor Room, Rivera's gearing up for his annual Christmas brunch on December 15. Of all the holiday-themed events, we dislike this one the most. In fact, we really dig it with the thumping Xmas music and someone always remarking, "No way, man! They put frickin' Cap'n Crunch in their hotcakes! I'll take a bloody mary with a tree in it."
