Sycuan Casino presented a $50,000 check to Bill Walton on behalf of the Challenged Athletes Foundation on Feb. 19. The donation is part of the casino’s promise to CAF to donate a percentage of its GameDay Bar & Grill. Cody Martinez, Chairman, Tribal Council, presented the check to Nancy Reynolds, Senior Director, CAF and NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton.

The San Diego Police Foundation will honor three women at the 2017 Women in Blue Luncheon on Mar. 1, the first day of National Women’s Month. The event is being held at the Marriott Marquis & Marina and will honor Roxanne Cahill, Police Dispatch Administrator, San Diego Police Department; Aida Vasquez, Supervisory Special Agent, Homeland Security Investigations; and Sandra Albrektsen, Captain, SDPD.

The Home Depot Foundation has granted $300,000 to Townspeople in efforts to complete the construction of Vista del Puente. The 52 unit permanent supportive apartment building in San Diego will have 26 units reserved for veterans and their families. The $21M project is scheduled to break ground in March with completion late 2018.

Catherine Hoke, founder and CEO, Defy Ventures introduces the “CEO of Your New Life” program to inmates at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. The MUFG Union Bank Foundation donated $50,000 to help launch the entrepreneurial and job skills program at the prison.

The MUFG Union Bank Foundation donated $50,000 to Defy Ventures to bring “CEO of Your New Life” program to the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. The Foundation’s donation was matched by donations from individual investors including tech entrepreneur Neil Senturia. “We selected Defy Ventures for our first in-prison program donation because of its focus on entrepreneurship, high success rate and innovative programming,” said Kathy Patoff, Chief Operating Officer, MUFG Union Bank Foundation.

Grossmont Healthcare District’s board of directors approved a $1 million grant to Mountain Health & Community Services for its new health center in campo to be called Mountain Health Family Medicine. The award which is the largest single community grant in GHD’s history, is planned to cover the purchase of equipment for primary care exams, surgical procedures, dental examinations, X-rays and on-site lab testing, along with other patient care support functions.

Freedom Dogs

Chris Kakuuchi and Lori & Bill Walton are co-chairing the Freedom Dogs 4th Annual Golf Tournament. The event is being held on Mar. 1 at the Del Mar Country Club. Funds raised will go toward providing services for the Marines at Camp Pendleton who are suffering from the physical and emotional trauma of war.

William J. Oakes Branch in Logan Heights

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego kicked off its 75th Anniversary Celebration with a book release event on Feb. 20 at the William J. Oakes Branch in Logan Heights. Author of “Against The Grain”, Marilyn Campbell attended the event. The Oakes Branch Alumni Association President A.C. Mills, along with BGCGSD Board Chair Dan Kotnik and South Regional Manager Connie Alvarez, concluded the ceremony cut the ceremonial ribbon on the new display case, which features news clipping and archives from the Club’s history.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego announced the first “early bird” winner of the San Diego Dream House Raffle. Gillian Klein of New Jersey was randomly selected to win her choice of a 2017 Tesla Model S or $50,000 cash. Proceeds from the raffle benefit RMDH to continue to provide essential services for families with a critically ill or injured child in a local hospital.

Mitchell Thorpe Foundation 5K

The Mitchell Thorpe Foundation held its 5K on Feb. 4. The theme of the event was “Bring Out The Warrior Within to help a Warrior Child, and raised $120,000 which goes to families with children fighting life threatening diseases, medical expenses and living expenses. This was one of the largest events MTF has held, raising $120,000. Sponsors included Planning Center, Independent Financial Group, NRG Energy, La Jolla Pharmaceuticals, DATRON and Mission Federal Credit Union.
